Make Me Smile

"I'm so happy that you love me. Life is lovely when you're near me. Tell me you will stay, make me smile." -Chicago

Things that are currently Making Me Smile:

1. My boss takes time to thank me for my work at the end of each day. (It's the little things...)

2. Jim has been reading the Bible to me at night (at least on nights when I don't fall asleep at 8:26 pm...) I've never read the Bible. I listen to a Christian Radio show on my way to work (shoutout to Family Life Today), they are always referencing the Old Testiment. I feel silly, but if it's not about Noah, Moses, Adam or Eve - I am lost. (Shoutout to my highschool Old Testament teacher, who rarely showed up for class.) So Jim is reading it to me. :)

3. Talking to my niece and nephew on skype. My nephew called took one look at my t-shirt and proudly announced: "The Chicago Tigers!"...to which my husband responded, "Kid, we need to talk." Nephew and I laughed for about 20 minutes.

4. Speaking of niece and nephew, we are taking our first vacation of the summer to see them next week, for my niece's Baptism!

5. Sweet Frog opened. Need I say more?

5. Recently discovered this beauty, my childhood summers now come in an alcoholic beverage:

The Smores Martini - only $3.99 on Fridays

6. Paella day at the farmers market:

7. And while this is not our display at the farmers market, this is the view that we get to enjoy, every Sunday, from 8:30-1 pm.

"Well she's writing a book" - Ms. Y, defending the potential borrower.
"What if the book sucks!!" - Mr. X.

I am Spoiled.

This morning, I woke up to my husband announcing to me:

"I'm smoking a fattie!"

Confused and concerned, I rose out of bed and followed him outside to the grill, where hours earlier, he had started his day's smoking.

*sizzle sizzle*

There I saw it: what was to be my breakfast that Memorial Day morning. A juicy, succulent "Fattie" that he had told me about weeks prior. A bacon weave held together a sausage roll, filled with cheddar cheese, green pepper, onion and tomatoes.

Observe, our first, applewood-smoked fattie. A tradition that will live on within the Conrad household. I am so spoiled.

On Markets and Celebrations

Have you ever woken up at 3:45 am, jumped in the shower and rushed out the door by 4, on a Sunday morning?

Jim and I can finally cross that off of our list of things to do before we die. Because starting 3 days ago, and for now on, that will be the way we kick off the week.

We are helping out a local farm: selling their product in the heart of DC at a farmer's market. It is exactly what we are passionate about: sharing the fruit of hard labor and God's creation with thousands of people. Country meets city life, if you will. And we are the liaison.

In other news, Jim and I just celebrated our 3 year anniversary yesterday! And by celebrated, I mean we went to work, got home late, grabbed a fresh meal to go at the market and watched American Idol. We remembered that the reason we chose this day to get married was because it meant we'd always have Memorial Day weekend to celebrate our anniversaries, and that is exactly what we are planning on doing.

And finally, the big news. ROBERT IS BACK FROM AFGHANISTAN!!!!!!!!!! I am so excited. I cannot believe that a year went by, even though it felt like eternity while we were in it. I am sure that I only feel 0.000000000001% of what his wife feels. But I am just so thrilled. And the fact that it happened on our anniversary was even more of a treat.

What Message Am I Sending?

This is absolutely embarrassing. Embarrassing, yet eye-opening.

I keep a tracker on my blog. You know, so I can see how many people love me on a daily and weekly basis, and important stuff like what town they read from. That's about all the information I am ever given. (I can't in turn stalk my stalkers, so please don't worry.) Today I discovered that there is another feature that I can see on my tracker. And it startled me.

You know how when you are google-ing something like "yellow labs in cottonelle commericals", and sometimes you can wind up on some unknown victim's blog? Well, apparently that happens often to my own. So often, in fact, that my tracker has a convenient list to let me know exactly what was typed into google/search engine that led a person to my blog's front doorstep. "Genius!" I thought. Until I looked further.

Look here:

Look closer:
Wow. I don't even know what to say. Is this the long lost brother-in-Christ that was standing behind me in the confession line that day, trying at last to track me down? Or is this some perv that probably needs to be standing in a confession line. For those who don't know, this is clearly linked to this blog post.

Well, 4.00% of my google-search readers, I hope you found what you were looking for. And if not, I hope you at least enjoyed my story which I tried my hardest to tell from a Christian perspective, complete with guilt and morals.

So please, go about your merry ways and remember, if you ever find yourselves forgetting the name of my blog and you are not one of my 5 beloved followers, you know what to google.

A special note to those who may be in charge of engraving my gravestone in the future: please don't let these words be the legacy you think I am leaving behind.

Thank you.

Yee-Haw. A Top 10.

It is a known fact that country music has the best fans over any other genre. Fans stick with their favorite artists throughout the decades, no matter what. To prove this, I have come up with a top 10 list that I compiled during a recent indulgence in my newly-found favorite hobby: watching country music videos from the 90s on youtube. (SO much fun...and a great distraction since Facebook is being given up for Lent.) The selfless me felt naturally inclined to copy these down to share them with you, my blog reader. May you enjoy them at least half as much as I did.

Here they are, in a very particular order (with no editing done, which trust me, is very painful) :

10. “This was me and my exboyfrienes song. He was going to sing it to me at our wedding but then found him cheating on me with my ex best friend so we never did get married. That was ten years ago but everyonce in a while have to listen to the song still love it.”
-More Than You’ll Ever Know Travis Tritt

9. “Don't those sexy, weepy eyes of his get ya goin'”
-(I prefer to read this with a thick, southern draw) State of Mind Clint Black

8. “Does clint have any american indian ancestory in him just curious.”
-(Because I nor these fans could help ourselves) State of Mind (again) Clint Black

7. “When youre alone and bored and maybe have a drink or two in you, aint nothin better than listenin to ol Dwight whine about love..”
-Back of Your Hand Dwight Yoakam

6. “My truck broke down and I had to walk to work for a couple of days till I fixed it. It was just a couple of miles but for some reason this song would always end up in my head as I was walking and it wouldn't seem so bad.”
-State of Mind Clint Black

5. “Is it legal to wear your pants that tight. Wow!!!”
-A Thousand Miles from Nowhere Dwight Yoakam (ew)

4. “This song goes through your head right before you take a stand for your own foolish pride (its a decision usually fueled by large amounts of alcohol).”
-You’ve Got to Stand for Something Aaron Tippin

3. Dwight is my absolute fav now & has been 4 alot of years, will always be. I thought with my health that if there were anyone I would like to see besides Jesus, it is him. Love Him Always!!!
-Back of Your Hand Dwight Yoakam

2. “My girlfriend of 1 year, 1 month, and 14 days broke up with me 7 months ago and I feel like a stone she has picked up and thrown to the hard, rock bottom of her heart. Teenage girls can be so cruel :( “
-Hard Rock Bottom Randy Travis
(I swear I did not edit this is any way...the count was there as clear as that sad face.)

1. “If you love something set it free....If it comes back to you get a restraining order.”
-You’re Gonna Miss Me Brooks & Dunn

My Sweet, Sadie-Lady

Hi There:)

Just a quick note to those who read my blog. One of my puppies is in a Washington DC-based contest called "Mutt Madness", (a dogs-version of March Madness).

The principle is the same: You start with several hundred dogs, those are narrowed down to 64, then to 32, then to 16, ...etc, until there is one remaining dog. The dogs are narrowed down by VOTES, by friends and family of the owner:)

So, could you, my loyal blog-reader, consider voting for her? It takes a minute to sign up, but it couldn't be easier.

Thank you so much!!!
The picture should look like the one on the top:)

Camp Conrad

Spring has officially begun at Camp Conrad. Clocks were turned ahead this morning, the family "Couch to 5k" has begun and currently there is an orchestra of tree frogs performing for me outside of my window.

The season was kicked off by one of my all-time favorite singers traveling all the way out to Virginia to perform for me!

The one and only: Sara Evans

Sara serenaded me with four tunes, the first was one of our wedding songs ("A Real Fine Place to Start"). It was wonderful to see her again after 10 years!

Jim worked all day on building jumps for the pups, his early-Spring project. They loved it:

Our future Westminster star, at Camp Conrad

I adore this time of year, it is by far my favorite. There is something about being cooped up all winter long, only to have one weekend where suddenly that mold is broken. Windows are opened and projects are instantly started. As mentioned earlier, we even started our family version of "Couch to 5k", or in George's terms: "Ottoman to 5k". I have so many projects in store for this Spring, I cannot even keep track.
As always, fun was had by all:

Work Words

I can't keep this in any longer. I am starting a feature on my blog called (as the title suggests): "Work Words". There are far too many quotes that come from work, and I can't keep them inside any longer. They.are.too.funny. Hope you enjoy half as much as I do! (and as always, anonymity will be practiced.)

"I wonder if Jesus thinks this is OK; this is just dispicable." - Mr. X on phone.

and, later that week, Mr. X on phone with another company:

"You guys suck too much for me to list!"

A Birthday Post, for my Birthday-Love.

Dear Husband,

I've tried to describe to you once or twice before the feeling that I get when I first wake up. I know we wake up differently each morning (you are always wide-eyed, handsome and ready-to-go, while I take a lot more personal-convincing that I must detach myself from my dreams and face reality), so I will do my best to express it.

I wake up at the same minute each day. I have such a fine-tuned internal clock that I have not needed an alarm clock in years. As soon as the clock switches to that minute, my dreams are immediately interupted with a mental check list that I find myself running through each morning:

"Where am I?" That's right, we bought our own house!

"Why are my legs numb?" Aww we have a dog named George! He loves sleeping on me.

"Where did these rings come from on my left hand?" That's right! He chose me!

And right about this point, you wake up and give me a hug.

I believe in the past I have described it as this: "Every morning when I wake up, I can't believe I'm married". What a poor explanation for the true feelings that come rushing through my soul. The truth is, this mental check list has only made its debut into my morning routine since I met you, because since that day, I have been in such disbelief that my life was to end up so beautifully. I cannot believe that I was created and formed by God to be loved in such a way that only you could provide. And what a beautiful, God-given love it is! Your love is unselfish, fruitful and above all, patient. And God knows He needed to create the most patient of men for me!

The other day you said to me, "We have such a great life." We shared outloud blessings in our life: our dogs that are obsessed with us, our house which is our valued investment, our jobs that we both love. I could not agree with you more, our life is wonderful. There is one thing I'd like to add to that list, and that is the gift of you. Without you, your encouragement and wisdom, none of those things would exist in our lives. Thank you for being a true man and leading us on a path towards heaven where blessings abound.

Tonight will be the 6th birthday that I've been blessed to share with you. After we open a few gifts, enjoy some (ice cream?) cake, I will go off to bed. I will pray as usual, thanking God over and over for you. Approximately 8 hours later, when my internal alarm goes off, I will replay once again the disbelief that you are mine, and that your love is real.

Thank you for that love that is so unique to you, and made so uniquely for me.

Love,

Your Wife

A Tale of 3 Lessons Learned (of Undergarments, Salad Dressing, and Theft)

I was born with a target on my head with fine print next to it that says: "Teach me a lesson. A hard one, please."

God loves teaching me lessons.

Take for example the time that I learned about humility. After finishing a set of laundry back in college, I quickly threw on a pair of freshly washed and dried jeans, and ran out the door to church for confession. Out of the 6 churches having confession that night, I chose the most conservative one, which also looked like a cathedral inside. There was a rather long line of students waiting to receive the sacrament. We were packed together against the cold brick wall like sardines. As I was waiting patiently in my designated spot for over 45 minutes, it was finally time to inch forward. I allowed my neck to rest from its perpetual people-watching and looked downwards during a stretch. Something bright orange caught my eye.

Standing beneath me, about 2 1/2 people-lengths back, were a pair of my neon orange, green-floral printed, straight outta Victoria Secret, undergarments. Standing next to them was a crowd of conservative theology majors and pre-priests from my school. Awesome.

They had obviously fallen out of my pants-leg, since I'd washed them both together. Now to leave them there and pretend they don't belong to me? Or pick them up.

I swallowed my pride and picked them up. Ah, humility.

Then there was that lesson that I learned called balance. With a dose of humility.

While studying in Austria, we had a day to celebrate the feast of St. Therese. The school put together a fancy feast for us in the Mensa (our dining area). It was a 5-course luncheon that was delicious. The staff needed people to help serve. As they went around asking one student from each table, I buried my head in my notebook even further to try and persuade those choosing that I was in fact a studious person.

"Emily, I'd like you to serve the salads."

"But I've never been a waitre--"

"That's fine, it's easy, you can't mess it up." (Thanks for the death wish.)

So I went and found the first salad tray that I was supposed to deliver, complete with 9 plates of already-dressed fresh lettuce. I delivered the first to the safest table: the nerdy studiers. I knew that they would not even look up and acknowledge me so my lack of waiting experience would go unnoticed. *Whew!*

The next table were the "God Bless You Sister-in-Christ"ers. They were busy giving each other back rubs and saying "Bless You Sister" to notice my clumsiness either. 2 tables down.

I decided that the cool people, the "jock" table would just have to come last. I needed to get down as much experience as I could before meandering to that table. By the time that table came though, my left arm was going numb from holding a tray above my head for so long.

"Hey guys, here's the salads! Yeah, can't wait for that philosophy test later on, huh?" I managed to squeak out. Yes! This was working, I was looking cool!

I got about 3/4 of the way passing the salads down the table. I thought it'd be easy to stand at one end and just have people pass them down. As I was standing, stunning the crowd with my one-liners, I kept hearing a "uhh, excuse me" from somewhere, but it was much too faint to make out. Besides, I was in the middle of cracking a good one about our professor.

"Excuse me" I heard it again. I looked over to where the voice was coming from. It was the pre-med, jockiest-jock boy to my right.

"Excuse me, you're dripping, the uhh..." I looked down. Ohmygosh. The Italian dressing from all previously-served salads had dripped onto the tray. And the 45-degree angle that I was now holding the tray at was not keeping that dripped dressing on. There was a giant, big wet Italian-dressing stain in the lap of this boy. On his white khakis.

Balance, with a side of humility, please.

(I avoided that boy for the rest of the semester, until I finally mustered up the courage to beg for forgiveness and the chance to give him money for the pants. He accepted the apology, but not the money.)

It really should have been no surprise for me that a new lesson was about due. I mean, I hadn't had one since I fell out of the reception hall on our wedding day, during the sparklers send-off. Thank God we had a hired photographer. We've got that one to remember forever!

Early this week, I learned a new lesson. Vanity. Rather, not to be vain.

On our way home from paradise, we stopped at a hotel mid-way. It was midnight, my husband and I were both drained from the road, and our puppies needed a break from being squished in the back of a prius. We pulled off a few different exits and checked-out various hotels before settling on the brightest, closest-to-highway one. It looked safe.

We took a few things out of the car, checked in, and fell right asleep on the cardboard beds. We slept for a few hours before the dogs woke us up, ready to go. It was pouring rain, so we thought it'd be best to head out early. Jim ran one dog to the car and said he'd be back to get the other.

He came back after about 10 minutes. White as a ghost.

"Someone broke into our car."

And what did they take? The valuables? The registration?

"Your suitcase. I'm going to go call the police."

We had a shattered window, a car full of glass and water, and I was now clothes-less.

My clothes are gone! That was the suitcase with only my nicest clothes in it! My favorite pajamas that they don't sell anymore! Those tops that I bought for our honeymoon! My shorts, that are impossible to find in that size these days! My hairdryer, straightening iron!!!

They were gone. For good. The cop passively remarked "Sonufagun! Only one break in last night! A new record!"

"Can you dust for fingerprints? I mean, that straightening iron was a Chi..."

"Nah- but whut I can do for ya is write-up a report so ya can have a copy!"

"Thanks. But my JanDor shirts from the 80s--"

"Well, I gotta run, have a good rest of the day, at least!"

Hmph.

So there we were, in nowhere PA, windowless, a clothesless wife, in the pouring rain.

We somehow managed to get home by evening and get the window fixed the next day. But my clothes! Anyone who is built like me knows how hard it is to have to shop in children's sizes, while looking for adult's styles. All I could think about was my clothes. Each piece.

It took a few days, but I finally realized that they were just clothes. I mean, they are replaceable, I guess. Sort of. What really matters is that no one was hurt, right? This means I get to go shopping now.

I just thank God that the neon-orange underwear was tucked safe away at home.
